Our trade journals and the national news media suggest the economy is puffing out of the recession. Gems and jewelry sales, nonessential purchases, dipped deeply over the last two years. The Chinese have imported a lot a Japanese pearl culturing technology over the last decade, as well as making some advances of their own. Additionally, the Chinese have an obvious advantage in labor costs compared to most competitors. The result is a good quality but inexpensive cultured pearl formed by a fresh water mussel, with the nacre (shiny surface material) generally extending the full depth of the pearl.

The price-quality ratio here is exceptional.
